TE FITI ’26 – Phase 01: Protecting Marine Life Through Youth Action

In alignment with environmental conservation and sustainable service, the Leo Club of IIT successfully carried out TE FITI ’26 – Phase 01, a volunteer-based environmental initiative at the Sea Turtle Hatchery, Hikkaduwa, on Sunday, 18th January 2026. The project aimed to actively support marine conservation efforts while fostering environmental responsibility among youth.

The initiative brought together dedicated Leo members who worked closely with hatchery staff to contribute to the daily maintenance and care operations. Volunteers engaged in cleaning turtle tanks, maintaining the surrounding premises, and assisting with routine hatchery activities essential for the wellbeing of sea turtles under protection.

Through this hands-on experience, participants gained meaningful exposure to marine conservation practices and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in protecting endangered sea turtle species. The project not only supported the hatchery’s ongoing efforts but also reinforced the importance of community involvement in preserving Sri Lanka’s rich coastal biodiversity.

The Initiative Focused on Key Objectives:

  • Supporting Sea Turtle Conservation: Assisting hatchery operations to ensure a clean and safe environment for sea turtles.
  • Promoting Environmental Awareness: Educating volunteers on marine ecosystems and conservation responsibilities.
  • Encouraging Youth Participation: Empowering young leaders to take active roles in environmental protection.
  • Strengthening Sustainable Service: Aligning Leo initiatives with long-term environmental impact and responsibility.

The Impact of TE FITI ’26 – Phase 01 Extended Across Multiple Dimensions:

  1. Environmental Contribution: Improved cleanliness and maintenance of the hatchery facilities.
  2. Youth Engagement: Enabled Leo members to actively participate in wildlife conservation efforts.
  3. Knowledge & Exposure: Provided firsthand insight into marine life protection and environmental service.
  4. Organizational Growth: Strengthened the Leo Club of IIT’s commitment to sustainability and eco-conscious service initiatives.

TE FITI ’26 – Phase 01 stands as a testament to how collective youth action can create meaningful environmental impact. By supporting sea turtle conservation and promoting ecological responsibility, the Leo Club of IIT once again demonstrated its dedication to service beyond communities extending its care to nature itself.
