Stronger Together – Phase 01: Standing in Solidarity with Affected Communities
In response to the devastating Cyclone Ditwah, which caused severe flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, the Leo Club of IIT launched Stronger Together – Phase 01, a disaster relief initiative supporting displaced families struggling to access food, clean water, clothing, and medical supplies.
The project mobilized resources through an online donation platform at www.soc.leoiit.org, where donors received automated certificates of appreciation. Leo members, students, and well-wishers came together to restore hope and dignity to affected communities.
On 3ʳᵈ December 2025, volunteers at IIT City Campus purchased, sorted, and packaged essential relief items. Donations were handed over to Kotikawatta Church and Pugoda Holy Cross Church, followed by an Ashirwada Puja at Delgoda Sumatipala Nahimi Hermitage to pray for the affected families and honor those who lost their lives.
The Initiative Focused on Key Objectives:
- Providing Immediate Relief: Ensuring essential supplies reached affected families promptly.
- Fostering Solidarity and Service: Engaging volunteers, students, and donors in collective humanitarian action.
- Mobilizing Resources Efficiently: Leveraging an online donation platform to reach wider communities of supporters.
- Honoring and Supporting Affected Communities: Offering aid, prayers, and moral support to families impacted by the disaster.
The Impact of Stronger Together – Phase 01 Extended Across Multiple Dimensions:
- Community Engagement: United volunteers and donors in meaningful humanitarian service.
- Restoring Hope: Delivered essential items and support to families affected by the cyclone.
- Volunteer Empowerment: Enabled Leo members and students to contribute actively to disaster relief.
- Organizational Growth: Strengthened the Leo Club of IIT’s identity as a youth-led movement dedicated to service and solidarity.
Stronger Together – Phase 01 demonstrated that in times of crisis, collective action and empathy can bring tangible relief, restore hope, and reaffirm the bonds of community. Through this initiative, the Leo Club of IIT once again showcased the transformative power of service in creating positive impact.
